Lucca is one of the most interesting places to visit in Tuscany. Most other characteristic towns in Tuscany are up on a hilltop - but not Lucca! As a small village set on a flat valley near the Serchio River, the town built imposing walls to protect itself from enemies in the 16th century. The ramparts still wrap around the compact village, offering a tree-lined walkway lined with benches and and drinking fountains where visitors and residents can stroll or bike around.
Located 30 km northeast of Pisa and 85 km from Florence, Lucca is well connected by the A-11 autostrada between Florence and Viareggio as well as by train and buses from Pisa and Florence. The train station is two blocks outside the ramparts on the south side of the town on Piazza Ricasoli. To the north of Lucca lie the Apuane Alps with their famous marble quarries from which Michelangelo created most of his masterpieces. The area also provides spas, mineral water springs, streams, woods and caves for those who enjoy a good hike.

Other places near Lucca worth visiting include the town of Barga, north of Lucca on the edge of the Garfagnana region and the Apuane Alps. Barga is considered one of the most beautiful medieval walled cities in Tuscany, yet it is not well-known by visitors outside of Tuscany and thus is less touristed.
Pietrasanta is a small medieval town near the coast sitting upon the foothills of the Apuan Alps. It is also the place where Michelangelo came for the best marble stone. It is still an important center for working marble, and you'll find many artisans at work here producing beautiful outdoor statues and indoor mantle pieces.
